Final Learning Statement

Throughout this certification program, I have experienced growth not only as a professional and teacher, but also as a human being. This journey allowed me to reflect deeply on who I am, how I teach, and how meaningful learning truly happens. It has been a transformative experience that challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone, reflect constantly, and become more intentional in every aspect of my teaching practice.

Learning About ESOL Students

One of the most important lessons I learned throughout this certification is that ESOL students learn best when they feel involved, safe, and valued in the classroom. I learned that language learning is much more than memorizing vocabulary or grammar rules; it is a process that requires interaction, reflection, confidence, and meaningful experiences. Every student enters the classroom with different backgrounds, emotions, abilities, and ways of learning, and as teachers, we must create opportunities for all students to participate actively and feel capable of succeeding.

Through many activities and teaching practices, I realized the importance of student-centered learning. When students are given opportunities to explore, interact, and discover language by themselves, learning becomes more meaningful and memorable. I want to continue creating classrooms where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, collaborating with others, and reflecting on their own learning process.

Learning About Teaching and Learning ESOL

One of the most valuable parts of this experience was discovering ECRIF and PDP. Learning about these approaches felt like entering a completely new world of teaching and learning. They showed me how lessons can become more engaging, reflective, organized, and purposeful. Before this certification, I often viewed teaching mainly as delivering information, but now I understand that teaching is about creating experiences that help students construct knowledge and become active participants in their own learning.

Throughout this course, reflection became an essential part of my growth. Reflection happened before, during, and after lessons, both inside and outside the classroom. Using DAPA helped me become more aware of my teaching decisions and their impact on students. It encouraged me to analyze not only what happened in a lesson, but also why it happened and how learning could be improved.

I also learned that effective teaching requires flexibility, preparation, observation, and continuous reflection. Over time, many strategies and practices that once felt difficult began to happen more naturally thanks to meaningful experiences, feedback, observation, and constant practice throughout this certification.

Learning About Myself as a Teacher of ESOL

This certification helped me discover strengths and areas of growth within myself as a teacher. One of the areas where I feel more confident now is creating engaging activities that encourage participation and interaction among students. I also became more reflective and intentional when planning lessons and making classroom decisions. I learned the importance of listening to students, observing their needs, and adapting lessons according to their learning process.

At the same time, this experience helped me recognize areas where I still want to continue growing. I want to become more confident managing timing during lessons, giving clearer instructions, and responding more effectively to unexpected classroom situations. However, instead of seeing these challenges as weaknesses, I now view them as opportunities for continuous learning and improvement.

Beyond the academic and professional growth, this experience also allowed me to build meaningful connections with others. I met wonderful people, strengthened friendships, and grew closer to people I already knew. Sharing this journey with others reminded me that learning is never a solitary experience.

Reaching the Goals of the Course

When I first began this certification, I expected to learn teaching techniques and improve my classroom practices. However, this experience became much more meaningful and transformative than I originally imagined. The goals and objectives of the course helped me grow not only professionally, but also personally. Through reflection, teaching practice, observation, collaboration, and feedback, I became more aware of the type of teacher I want to become.

I believe I was able to reach many of the goals of this course because I learned to reflect more deeply, plan more intentionally, and understand learning from a more student-centered perspective. At the same time, this experience also left me with important questions about how I can continue improving, creating more meaningful learning experiences, and supporting students more effectively in the future.

As I move forward into my own teaching context, my goal is to continue growing as a reflective, compassionate, and intentional educator who values meaningful learning, collaboration, and human connection inside the classroom.

This certification helped me rediscover and enjoy the world of teaching even more. It reminded me why I chose education and reinforced my passion for helping others learn and grow. I will forever be grateful to SIT, UNICDA, the Development Center, World Learning, and the United States Embassy in Santo Domingo for making this life-changing opportunity possible.
